Scholarship in early 20th century superimposed Christian notions of faith and Japanese sectarian studies onto the studies of Chinese Buddhism. This research will reconstruct the understanding of Chinese Pure Land tradition as a non-sectarian pan-Mahayana bodhisattva meditation tradition by scrutinizing the Buddhist thought and practice of Shengan Shixian in early-Qing.
