Why is there a large number of philosophical views? We normally think that they are due to deep reflection on the part of philosophers. Buddhism thinks otherwise. The Buddhist position is that they are entirely due to a psychological reason, i.e. craving or the self-centered desire due to the self-view. When we have the self-view, we look at the world through the ego-centric perspective. Then we do not see what is actually there; we see what we desire to see. Accordingly all metaphysical and theological views turn out to be rationalizations of our deep-seated desires and innermost anxieties. The ultimate goal of Buddhism is not to have a view, but to view. The emerging conclusion is that Buddhism is not a philosophy: it is a meta-philosophy, a philosophy of philosophy that explains the origin and nature of philosophy itself.

為何大量哲學觀念出現於世？許多人認為哲學觀念來自哲學家的深思，但佛教卻不以為然。佛教堅持哲學觀念來自心理因素──以「身見」誘發自我中心為本的貪欲。身見令我們以自我中心角度考察世界，使人只能看到內心渴求的事物而不能如實洞察事物實相。由此推論，所有形而上觀及神學觀只不過是將我們內在深層欲望及內心焦慮合理化的表現。佛教最終目的不是為樹立任何觀念 (to have a view)，反而是直觀事物真相 (to view)。佛教不是一門哲學，而是元哲學 (metaphilosophy)，一門解釋哲學自身的起源與本質、有關哲學本身的哲學。

About the Speaker
Y. Karunadasa is Professor Emeritus at the University of Kelaniya and a former director of its Graduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies. He has served as a visiting professor at the University of London, the University of Toronto, and the University of Hong Kong, and as the Numata Chair at the University of Calgary. He is currently a Visiting Professor at The Buddha-Dharma Centre of Hong Kong. He lives in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

卡鲁納達薩教授為斯里蘭卡凱拉尼亞大學榮休教授、前巴利語與佛學研究生院院長，曾任倫敦大學、多倫多大學、香港大學客座教授及卡爾加里大學沼田講座教授。他現時為香港佛法中心客座教授，居於斯里蘭卡科倫坡市。
