As both Hui Yuan and Ji Zang have written their respective commentary on the Amitāyurdhyāna Sūtra, my PhD thesis titled, A Critical Study of Commentaries on the Amitāyurdhyāna - Focus on Pure Land Teachings and Visualisation (with reference to Ching ying Hui Yuan’s and Jia-xiang Ji Zang’s) aims to discuss the differences and similarities of their interpretations of the Sutra, the philosophical premises that underpin their beliefs, and their impacts on the later development of the Pure Land School of Buddhism in China.
